Motivate Them and They Will Act

I emailed Les Brown and asked him to speak at Big Ooga. I was shocked when the phone rang a few minutes later.

“Hello, this is Big Ooga.”

“Hello, this is Les Brown.”

I must have been drinking the motivational Kool Aid when I reached out in the first place. “Why not give it a shot?” Why not start the relationship?”

“Les Brown!!!!” I said,  Thank you for calling! I just emailed you!”

He had a few minutes before going live on KFWB.com radio LA.

In doing research on Les’s message I noticed distinct parallels between motivational speaking and business.

Les is among the world’s top motivators.  Motivating people to take action is every company’s goal.

We want to change people’s thinking, compel them to act, to agree, to join, to care or want something badly enough to buy.

Les focuses his messages on YOU. His stories are about how he has achieved and overcome adversity by defining himself and setting his goals and how YOU can do the same.

He has created an industry about helping YOU so that you define your life by your OWN greatness.

How this shows up in the business space is products for overcoming fear, achieving personal greatness – getting unstuck, living your dreams, taking the power and persistence of YOU and setting goals.

He does this through books, videos, speaking engagements, consulting, live talk radio etc.

The Relationship Begins with Childhood

Les Brown introduces himself as the son of Mamie Brown – I know YOU because I’ve been where you are. I’ve been lower than low and I’ve raised myself up.

I know you because I know how to get you from here to there from where ever you are – and I’m going to do it by relating to you from my heart and sharing myself and my stories.  I’m going to give you tools and ways to think about things I know will work for you.

And when we’re done with our conversation I’m going to tell you, “I appreciate you.”

How this translates to your businesses – I am X company, with Y heart and I know you (my customer) by what I’ve developed for you (product or service) to change your life (or your company) for the better.

I’m going to talk about it in terms of YOU and why YOU matter so much. And if I’m truly a company with heart, soul and competencies this will speak to you, motivate you to call me and when you work or buy from me you will know in your own heart I really do care.

And this will be the start of a real relationship that will build my own industry while improving yours.  And If I’m a phony, you’ll know that too.
