Entrepreneurial Boomer Irony – the great scramble

A full English breakfast with scrambled eggs, ...Image via Wikipedia

When the internet first became a goldmine of information I thought, “Wow, this is incredible!” As it kept expanding in all directions I thought, “Yikes, this is getting to be way too much!”

There is a constant pressure to keep pace with technology so consistent learning has become the norm.   A tip that may save you hours of aggravation is to learn only what applies.  In this climate the minute you learn something new, you have to have to learn something newer.

Younger generations think in fractured compartmentalized synchronicity and learn at the speed of light.   My assistant can listen to her iPod, text her BFF and proficiently enter data into CRM while nuking her Lean Cuisine.  She learned CRM right under my nose when the consultant we hired tried to teach us both. He determined this was not a cost efficient path – better to teach Melissa and let me become her problem.

This is the irony for the Boomer generation.  We are tech savvy enough to know google is a verb and informed enough to know we’re inept.  We’re aware of new technologies, applications and result possibilities but not skilled enough to ride the wave of change.

So I’m dedicating this post to every reader who is scrambling to keep up one step at a time – to the people who will get on Twitter tomorrow and Twellow the next day and then go out for a pizza to recover.
