Self-employed or building a company?

There is a distinction between making a living and building a company.  Both are entrepreneurial, but the approach is very different. Breaking out of your box means understanding business models and putting them into effect.

Making a living means finding a stream of customers or clients who want what you sell or do and doing more of it.

You may end up growing and hiring an assistant, finding and outsourcing service partners or adding services, products and internal team members.  At that point you’ll be ready to evolve into creating a new business model.

For all of the small business programs and classes I’ve taken – for all the small business advice I have sought - this simple bit of knowledge has not been made perfectly clear until I was sitting in strategy meetings with the Big Ooga strategic team and it revealed itself as clear as day.

Wouldn’t you think it would be the first question we need to ask as entrepreneurs? And shouldn’t that be the lead question from anyone who trains entrepreneurs in small business development?
