The Future of Small Business – Predictions for 2012

In Carol Tice’s article for Entrepreneur magazine, she culled stacks of forecasts to create a Top 10 List of Small Business Predictions for 2012. What struck me most was the 10th prediction, because it was hers and mine.

10. Companies that collaborate with each other and help each other have a better chance of prospering.

Why? Because jointly:

We have more opportunities.

We have a broader range of services to offer.

We have the ability to work in reciprocity.

It extends our individual business networks.

The synergy can lead to inventive, new revenue opportunities.

And..

As a result of working with other companies, you become the one they think about when an opportunity arises.

This Entrepreneur’s Life – Breaking the Silence

The other night at a business event I met a fellow networking leader who I had been looking forward to speaking with. In the first few minutes of conversation she asked me what I thought of  “Person X”.

“You don’t want to ask me that.” I said, knowing she could be associated with her.

“Yes, I do.” she said.

“No you don’t.” I said to this stranger I liked immediately.

I was hoping this would send a strong enough signal but I could see my opinion was important to her.

A friend of mine might have said, “Not a fan.” And this would have been the gracious answer.

What was going through my mind was I don’t know the impact of my answer.  And in this particular case I have a strong opinion.

These truths or silences reflect on their source but if I don’t share my real opinion then I am associated by context and this is an unacceptable acquiescence. By not making a decision, I’m making a decision.  I would have so much rather said, “Pass the Shrimp!”

But I lowered my voice and said, “She’d eat her mother.”

And in an audible exhale, my new associate asked when we could get together next.  We did and it was wonderful. A new bridge was built.

Mental note:  I’m giving myself an F on execution.

Endorsing Entrepreneurs & Small Biz Puts Your Rep on The Line

When Big Ooga opened for business its guiding principle was to bring really good entrepreneurs and small business owners together across industry and specialty.

I’m sure you know from experience that working with new people is risky. If you’ve hired someone to provide a service, they have to meet your standards and expectations. If you’ve partnered with a professional to work on behalf of your company, they have to work at the level of quality and care that you do. It’s your rep on the line.

The commitment to finding excellent entrepreneurs and small companies takes time and discretion. This is where I choose to spend my own time because I want Big Ooga to be that kind of group.

When we consider a company for membership I speak with the business owner, review their work, talk to their references and get to know them as people and professionals. Often I work with them to find out more, so I can get inside of their process.

Then I make referrals or host their classes, knowing I can proudly put the Big Ooga name behind them.

Call me crazy but I only want to work with people who have my back and my future, people I would invite to dinner or into a project.

Call me idealistic to only want to surround myself with people who care about others’ achievements.

Now call me realistic – because that is exactly the kind of group we’ve built together.

To call ourselves a network is an injustice. But Big Honking Consortium of Mutual Respect Designed to Drive Business To Your Business is just a little crass and long-winded.

Luckily we have some pretty fantastic marketers and branders in the group – and as we move into the future you will most certainly see the right words come onto the page.

Until then, I hope you can feel the love and find your people.

Love Notes From The Freshman #SOBCon11

Standing on the edge of tomorrow, seated at my work table and surrounded by fellow travelers, leaders and visionaries, I heard that “Success is a direction – forward” @SandersSays.

That the bravery of our individualism is evolutionary and expressed through a Body of Work (“BOW”),  @SteveFarber.

I learned it is up to us to “decide” our soul’s purpose and where it fits into this world @LizStrauss, as opposed to a homicide or genocide of it.  That it is there in the essence of each of us, an obligation to ourselves, our society and our tribe, no matter what size that may be, to come forth with our stories, Cathy Brooks and to act on our visions for our companies and ourselves, to the benefit of others – to Lead the Way @Starbucker because the world will be “more” because of it.

This thinking, urging, inquiry and growth was not an option for the people in the SOBCon room.  Discomfort was eclipsed by love and a weaving of illumination into concrete and amorphous steps to be taken, formulated and discovered.

From InvisiblePeople.TV to USA Today, from aggregators of information to originators of it, we all stood together at the cross-section of present thought, reflection and foresight collectively growing up another notch.

I know from yesterday what my work is tomorrow. It is to come out from behind the veil and architect the future of my organization, not as the impresario but as the Choral director – and to join the bigger conversation (plumb naked – yikes).

To my new friends, you are precious (and we’ve got work to do!). To my old friends, I wouldn’t have been at SOBCon without you (Carol, Carter, Barry, Liz) To those I had the privilege of working with and learning from, I hope my contributions will someday lift yours right back.  And to my new daughter – it is with love and respect that I wrap you in my wings.. even though I’ll be the one who needs the seat belt.

Raising Happy Healthy Companies One Entrepreneur at a Time

Yes, it’s going to take a village to raise happy, healthy companies, but being out there on your own isn’t the only way.  Ask yourself,  “If I don’t have to do everything myself, why would I want to?”  By putting a community behind you, you’ll have more resources, less stress, and more time to focus on what you do best.

If you’re ready to be the change, let’s get started!  The first step is to join us at the Networking Level.

At this level you will be able to join us in leadership and receive OogaShares to help you afford some of the services for your development. We will be spending the next two months populating the pods to create just the right mix of people.
